Jock Monteith – Professional Biography

Jock Monteith is a highly respected salmon fishing professional who has built a strong reputation for delivering exceptional service within the Scottish salmon fishing industry.

Jock’s involvement with Scottish salmon fishing dates back to 1970 when, at the age of five, he landed his first salmon on the River Tay under the guidance of legendary Tay ghillie Willie Laird (1912–1991). This early introduction to the sport began a lifelong dedication to salmon fishing and river stewardship.

As a professional Head Ghillie on the River Tay, Jock significantly raised the operational standards of two high-profile Tay salmon beats through his professional expertise in salmon fishing tactics, beat management, and client hosting.

Beyond his riverbank work, Jock has also played a pioneering role in several important initiatives within the sport. Most notably, he privately funded and helped initiate Europe’s largest river habitat survey on the River Tay. This groundbreaking project — the Tay Western Catchment Project — successfully evaluated more than 1,000 miles of the Tay’s headwaters.

• Founder of the Inchewan Burn Habitat Restoration Project a self-funded two-mile habitat restoration programme with project support from SEPA
• Founder and fundraiser of the Tay Western Catchment Project, a 1,017-mile watercourse survey of the Tay headwaters
• Founder of The Tay Foundation Project, a private sponsorship initiative focused on River Tay habitat restoration

Jock also became the first ghillie in Scotland to publicly advocate for 100% Catch & Release salmon fishing during a BBC Radio Scotland interview in 2004.

He was also invited to participate in three episodes of the television series Turas a’ Bhradain (2007–2009), filmed on the Rivers Tay, Spey and Fyne. The series continues to be broadcast today due to its enduring popularity.
