About This Salmon Lure

This salmon lure was designed to replicate the North Sea sprat’s ‘live’ scale pattern which is a target species for Atlantic salmon while feeding at sea. The effectiveness of the copper side was learned by Jock Monteith via tactical advice from his late mentor Willie ’the ghillie’ Laird on the River Tay during the 70’s. This 100mm x 24mm lure has been purposely designed to weigh in at 27g to create ‘optimal' stream lure action (even when fished slowly) and to also be fishable on both medium & large sized salmon rivers. The 1 x rear split ring feature positions the hook close to the target to ensure a better 'hook up' ratio. This lure should be fished with an initial 'tightish' clutch setting (to set the hook properly) then loosen off the reel clutch to play the fish.

Lure Longevity & Maintenance

As with any painted lure that's likely to come into frequent contact with riverbed stones & gravel it is recommended that an extra coat of varnish is applied to the painted side (and on an annual basis) to maximise durability and to prolong the perfect aesthetics of the lure.

How To Fish

This lure should be fished with a slightly upstream 'squarish' cast paired with a steady retrieve as that makes the lure's retrieve a perfect 'not too fast & not too slow' curving swing. In deeper salmon pools when salmon are holding deep this lure can be counted down for 2 - 6 seconds (depending on the pool depth) for a deeper lure swim retrieve. The key for effective spin fishing water coverage is to make sure the angle and distance of cast are consistent throughout the fishing day and as importantly, making sure each casting position is separated by 1 x 10ft rod length while fishing downstream (or upstream). It is really your boots that catch salmon while spin fishing if you think closely about it as good riverbank movement between casts equates to ‘effective' water coverage which is the real key for success in all salmon fishing approaches.
